The
International Leaders in Urban Governance Programme for African Countries, to be held between
26-30 August 2019 in Singapore. The course is organized jointly by UN-Habitat and Singapore’s Center for Liveable Cities.

The programme is addressed to senior decision makers, policy makers, and senior executives of national, sub-national and local government organizations who hold responsibilities over the planning, management and implementation of urban development policies, programmes and projects. Last year’s edition was attended by 36 city leaders from 14 countries, including mayors, ministers, heads of metropolitan regions and provincial governments, senior officials, and senior urban practitioners. Singapore and UN-Habitat encourage the participation of city/country teams comprised of 3 members as follows: mayor/deputy mayors with 2 senior directors or minister/deputy minister with 2 ministerial directors. Other compositions will be considered on a case-per-case basis.
CONTENT:
The 5-day long urban governance programme seeks to strengthen the capacity of decision-makers in the area of urban management and planning for sustainable urbanization, and develop skills and know-how in local finance, housing, urban planning and land management, mobility and urban sustainability. The programme develops a hollistic and integrated sustainable urban development approach that is fully consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda and the Singapore’s Liveability Framework. Selected participants will develop their urban challenge and prepare presentations as per template prior to initiating the programme. During the programme in Singapore, participants will engage in peer-to-peer dialogues, undertake site visits to institutions and projects and receive support in the formulation, development and follow-up of action plans on the priority urban challenges for their respective cities. The programme will be enhanced by the participation of mentors and practitioners from the Government of Singapore and UN HABITAT.
COSTS AND TUITION FEES:
There is no tuition fee charged to participants. The Government of Singapore will sponsor the costs of programme fees, as well as accommodation, per diem, health insurance, local airport transfers, and daily transfers to/from the training venue for the duration of the programme in Singapore for accepted participants. Participants will be responsible for covering the costs of their return airfare and visa fees.
