GLTN and SDI hold Training of Trainers on STDM use and application
About 40 participants, mostly working with urban poor communities, have participated in a three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) and one-day Learning Workshop on Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) use and application in Kampala, Uganda from 23 to 27 July 2012. The events were organized by GLTN and Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and the participants were representatives from eight countries, namely Uganda, Kenya, India, Philippines, Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia.
Two parallel training sessions were conducted. One session was focused on technical and hands-on training on STDM and the other session was conducted for the community leaders dealing with the mapping and enumeration process through various country case studies. However, there were also some opportunities for the participants to come together including during the conducting of a field work exercise in administering the questionnaire and data collection. The fourth day, which was the one-day Learning Workshop, proved to be very productive as country case studies on mapping and enumeration were presented including a way forward in adopting or implementing STDM were shared.
In his welcome remarks, Commissioner Samuel Mabala from Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (MoLHUD) highlighted the outcomes of STDM Pilot in Mbale Municipality. He emphasized that the project does not only strengthen the working relationships between the slum federations and government authorities (local and national) but it also addresses some immediate needs like establishing a physical address for every member of the community.
The events are the culminating activities of the STDM Project in Uganda entitled 'Addressing the Land Information Requirements of the Urban Poor – Phase I: Piloting of the Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) in Preparation for Wider Learning and Application'. Cities Alliance and Governments of Norway and Sweden (Sida) continued to support GLTN activities including these events.
