The draft General comment No. 26 (2022) on Land and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has been published
By way of public consultation, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in 2021 invited interested individuals and organizations, including States, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, academics, international and regional organizations and experts, to make a written contribution to the draft general comment.
Written submissions were received from 100 entities, including these GLTN Partners: Habitat International Coalition (HIC) – Housing and Land Rights Network, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Asian NGO Coalition for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ANGOC), UN-Habitat, Landesa, International Land Coalition (ILC) and Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). The Co-Rapporteurs studied these contributions and revised the draft, which was then presented to the Committee for further consideration and subsequent adoption.
The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by its States parties. The Committee was established in 1985 to carry out the monitoring functions assigned to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The Committee publishes its authoritative guidance on the provisions of the Covenant, known as general comments.
